CURRENT IN A SERIES CIRCUIT Flashcards
What are the components in a series circuit?
Draw them down and label.
Cell Lamp switch(open) switch(closed) Ammeter
When electrons flow out a circuit and move around it when the switch is closed, what is this flow of electrons called?
An electric current
From which end does an electric current flow from and to.
The current flows from the negative end of a cell to the positive end. (Because electrons are negative)
Electrons carry energy from the cell, where does this energy get transferred?
They pass this energy to the components in the circuit such as the lamp.
Explain the transformation between the different energy stores when energy is passed to the lamp
In the lamp, the electrical energy is transferred to light energy and thermal energy
when electrons return to the positive end of a cell, are they carrying more or less energy than when they left the negative end?
when electrons return to the positive end of a cell, they are carrying less energy than when they left the negative end
What symbol is used to represent the electric current?
What do we call this?
We represent the electric current using an arrow like the one below
<
we call this the conventional current
how many paths can the current flow around in the circuit and why?
The current can only flow in one path around the circuit because it has no branches.
What is an electric current?
A flow of charge around a circuit.
what is the unit of an electric current
The unit of an electric current is the ampere (A) this can be shortened to amp.
What can we use to measure the current in a circuit?
We can measure the current in a circuit by using an ammeter
draw down the symbol for ammeter
-A-
is current ever used up in a circuit?
Current is never used up in a circuit. In a series circuit the current is the same all the way around.
