Obituary
Tanzania’s second president, was fondly known as Mzee Rukhsa - “Mr Permission”. The former leader, who died at the age of 98, had a reputation for allowing a long list of things which had been denied by his predecessor - such as multiparty democracy, independent media, free trade and the private ownership of televisions. In 1985, when he was first sworn in, Tanzania’s economy was struggling, reeling from the ruinous effects of founding President Julius Nyerere’s socialist policy known as ujamaa, as well as the war against neighboring Uganda that toppled Idi Amin. He opened up the economy, allowed other parties to run in elections, enabled independent media to exist and permitted the sale of televisions to individuals, which previously had only been communally owned. He also began talks with the International Monetary Fund about getting financial support. With the economy on the brink of collapse, the reforms were seen as having saved the economy.

Researchers said the species would have lived alongside dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops. Security was tight for his first trip to the Muslim-majority region since he made the controversial change in 2019. “I am working hard to win your hearts,” he told a rally in Srinagar, weeks before general elections are held. An armed revolt against Indian rule in the disputed territory has claimed tens of thousands of lives since the 1980s. This region was divided after India and Pakistan gained independence from Britain in 1947. The two nuclear-armed states both claim the region in its entirety and have fought two wars over it in the decades since. Mr Modi’s decision to impose direct federal rule angered many in this region. (WORLD NEWS) This country is to set up a temporary port in Gaza coast for aid delivery. The temporary port will increase the amount of humanitarian assistance to Palestinians by “hundreds of additional truckloads” per day, officials say. The port will take “a number of weeks” to set up, the officials said, and will be able to receive large ships carrying food, water medicine, and temporary shelters. Initial shipments will arrive via Cyprus, where Israeli security inspections will take place. It is not clear who will build the causeway or secure the aid on land, meaning crucial questions about whether the operation can succeed remain unanswered. Gaza has no deep water port and so the this country has for weeks been looking at ways to get shiploads of aid in urgently, while the administration has publicly ramped up its pressure and increasingly shown in public its impatience with Israel over the desperate situation on the ground.

‘Go Away Little Girl’ singer , half of Steve & Eydie duo, dead at 88. He performed with his wife, Eydie Gormé, around the world until 2009. She retired over health-related concern. She died at the age of 84 in 2013. He, meanwhile, continued to tour until 2019, when he received his Alzheimer’s diagnosis. The actor, comedian and vocalist skyrocketed to fame with Eydie, whom he married in 1957, after they met on “The Tonight Show,” which starred Steve Allen. Just a year after walking down the aisle, the happy couple scored their own variety show which ran for a season in 1958. They went on to win a Grammy for best performance by a vocal duo or group and an Emmy for their television special “Steve & Eydie Celebrate Irving Berlin” in 1979. Lawrence also had an impressive solo career, scoring Top 10 hits with 1959’s “Pretty Blue Eyes,” 1960’s “Footsteps,” 1961’s “Portrait Of My Love” and 1962’s No. 1 hit, “Go Away Little Girl.” He displayed his talent on the big screen, too, most notably portraying talent manager Maury Sline in 1980’s “Blues Brothers” and its two sequels. Furthermore, he earned a Tony nomination for playing Sammy Glick in Broadway’s “What Makes Sammy Run” in 1964.

(US NEWS) This exam is now fully digital. Rather than filling in a bubble answer sheet with a No. 2 pencil, US test-takers will be using a computer. US test-takers will use the fully digital version of the test. Prospective college students are still required to go in person to a testing site, but they will take the exam on their personal laptop or tablet, a school-issued device or a borrowed device from the College Board, the non-profit organization that develops and administers the test. The exam is also shorter – down to about two hours instead of three – and more time can be spent on each question. There are shorter reading passages, with one question tied to each, and a built-in calculator. The new exam is also what the College Board calls “adaptive.” This means that both the math and reading sections will be divided into two parts. The second section will be easier or harder depending on how the test-taker performed in the first section. The exam will still be scored on a 1600-point scale, and the College Board has said that students won’t be disadvantaged if they are routed to an easier second section. Students will get scores back in days, instead of weeks.

The group, known as “The Flies,” are now eligible for NASA missions to the International Space Station (ISS), Artemis launches to the moon and, if all goes well, to even fly to Mars. Subway safety is a constant concern in this city, where the system’s recovery is critical to the city’s rebound from the pandemic, and public officials can be as sensitive to the perception that mass transit is dangerous as they are to an actual rise in crime.

(US NEWS) US House passes bill that could ban this social media app nationwide. The House passed legislation that could ban this social media app in the US unless the app parts ways with its Chinese parent company, ByteDance. It’s a major challenge to one of the world’s most popular social media platforms, used by 170 million Americans. Lawmakers supportive of the bill have argued this social media app poses a national security threat because the Chinese government could use its intelligence laws against ByteDance, forcing it to hand over the data of US app users. It’s not yet clear what the fate of the measure will be in the Senate. If enacted, the bill would give this social media app about five months to separate from ByteDance, or app stores in the US would be banned from hosting it on their platforms. In a statement, the social media app blasted the House vote and urged the Senate to “consider the facts.” China’s foreign ministry responded angrily ahead of the vote, calling it an “act of bullying.”
