Curitiba Flashcards
What type of country?
Emerging
Where?
South-West Brazil
Population?
1.8 million population
Famous for?
Its urban planning which started in 1968 when the population was 430,000
Master Plan
Mobility and land use cannot be disassociated which each other
All citizens should have quick access to quick, affordable transportation
Public transport should be given highest priority and other transportation should be modified accordingly
Transport Strategies
- buses are cheap
- lanes dedicated to buses only
- bi-articulated buses that carry 2 million passengers a day
- pre-payment causes efficient boarding (faster loading and unloading)
- boosted tubular bus stops
- bus doors are wider
- bus drivers are paid per km driven not per passenger
- buses have their own lanes in the middle of the road
- coloured buses according to their function
1. Red express buses
2. Orange buses from outlying districts to express routes
3. Grey buses from suburbs to the city centre
4. Green buses from suburbs to express routes - 80% of travellers use the BRT (Bus Rapid Transport system)
- no one lives more than 400 metres from a bus stop
Effect of the transport strategies?
- less pollution and cuts travel times by 3
- lack of congestion by private cars
- underground if more expensive (didn’t end up being built due to how efficient the buses are)
- above ground is 500 times cheaper
- travels at the same speed and carries as many people
- lowest rate of pollution
- lower per capita fuel consumption
- low income earners only spend 10% on transport
- during peak hours buses arrive every minute
Waste disposal
- highest rates of recycling
- plastics are remodelled
- costs no more than the old landfill system
- garbage is separated into 2 categories (organic and non-organic)
- Curitiba recycles 2/3 of its waste
Green exchange
- overproduction in the green belt
- exchanges food and bus tickets for waste in slums
- benefits the council and also the poor
- people in the slums collect sorted rubbish
- promotes social inequality
- promotes community and encourages the poor to use public transport
- solves the over production problem in the green belt
- saves on road wondering as the city council collection trucks can’t get to narrower roads
Open Space
In order to build tall sky scrapers, owners need to have more green space at the bottom of the building or paid extra tax that went to fund lower housing
28 parks and wooded areas
Parks stop squatter settlements from being developed
Curitiba has 4 times the green space recommended
Housing
Still have slums
Government offers low interest loans on the land and free house designs for the people
Residents are trained to build the houses
Houses have electricity, sewerage and running water
Economy
Economy of Curitiba is principally manufacture
Volvo has a big factory there and in 1992 they developed the bi-articulated buses
Volvo was attracted to the city by its educated work-force
Curitiba has one of the oldest universities in Brazil
By 2000, over 550 factories were operating in the industrial city, providing some 50,000 direct jobs and 150,000 indirect jobs
Education
Free education
Library filled with recycled and thrown out books
Health
Lowest pollution rate in Brazil
Less risk of cancer and asthma
Due to public transport and green spaces
