Cumulative Material Flashcards
Second largest phylum of fungi
basidiomycota
Basidiomycota
defining characteristics
- Mushrooms!
- Filamentous or yeasts
- Production of basidiospores on a basidium
- Production of complex fruiting body
Smuts and Rusts
diverse and common plant proteins
basidiomycota
Ectomycorrhizae
specific mycorrhizae (an association between a fungus and the roots of a plant)
* grow on actively growing fine roots
* dominate in temperate forests
part of basidiomycota
Mushroom poisoning
relatively rare but icidents have been notable in people who are newly arrived in North America (due to them eating mushrooms they think are safe)
Genus of Basidiomycota (mushroom) that are praticularly deadly - responsible for most mushroom related deaths
Deadly Amanitas
* “Death caps”
* “Destroying angels”
Basidiomycota
What do Amanitins have that make them deadly
cyclic peptides which are hepatotoxins, nephrotoxic, etc. (parts of our body that turns over cells fastest) - leads to death
* no true antidote - best option is fluids and liver transplat
* several genera produce amatoxins, most common in Amanita species
Basidiomycota
What do Amanitins do in the body
Potent inhibitors of RNA polymerase II - can’t produce new proteins
Basidiomycota
Potential antidote for Amanitin posioning
Silibinin (milk thistle compound)
* may prevent uptake of amanitins into cells
species names following what type of naming method
Binomial nomenclature = two name system on naming
* e.g. homo sapiens, agaricus bisporus
Koch postulates??
