Culturing Microorganisms Flashcards
What is the maximum temperature at which microorganisms in a school lab should be grown ?
25c
What type of equipment can be used to transfer microorganisms to an ajarjelly culture medium ?
Inoculating loop
Why is it important to sterilise Petri dishes and culture medium before use?
To kill and unwanted microorganisms
How can we prevent contamination ?
- heating the inoculating loop over a flame
- tape the lid on
- leave the agar dish upside down
- the petrified dish and culture medium must be sterilised
Why is leaving the dish upside down important ?
To stop drops of comdemstation falling on to it
Why is tapping the lid on important ?
Stop ,microorganisms from the air getting inn
How can bacteria be grown in a lab ?
- pour hot agar jelly in to a Petri dish
- use an inoculating loop to transfer the microorganism
- The microorganisms will multiply
What is an inhibition zone ?
The clear area around antibiotic where bacteria have died
What does the size of the inhibition zone show ?
How affective the antibiotic is
What is the control when investigating the effect of antibiotics ?
A piece of paper soaked in sterile water
This shows the difference in growth
What is the equation for calculating inhibition zones ?
Area= pie r2
