Cell Divison Flashcards
What are chromosomes ?
Copied lengths of DNA
What is the cell cycle ?
- Growth and replication of DNA
2. mitosis
Why is mitosis used for by multicellular organisms ?
For growth development and repair
Repairing damaged cells
What happens in the first part of the cell cycle?
The sub cellular structures increase -ribosomes and mitochondria
DNA is then duplicated
What happens in mitosis?
- chromosomes line up at the centre of the cell
- cell fibres pull them apart to go to opposite ends of the cell
- membranes form around the s this becomes the nucleus
- cytoplasm and cell membrane divide
What does mitosis produce ?
Two identical daughter cells
Where in the cell are chromosomes found ?
Nucleus
What type of cell replicates by binary fission?
Prokaryotic
What is the right condition for bacteria to divide?
Warm environment
Lots of nutrients
What is the name of the process at which bacteria divide ?
Binary fission
Give the stages of binary fission?
- Cricular DNA and plasmids replicate
- dna strands move to opposite poles of the cell
- cytoplasm divides new cell wall formed
- two new daughter cells produced
Describe how stem cells can be used to treat disorders ?
They can be grown into a particular type of cell, that can replace faulty ones
Explain why embryonic stem cells have the potential to treat more disorders than adult cells ?
Embryonic stem cells have the potential to develop in to any type of cells
Where as assault cells can only delicious in to certain types
How can stem cells be used to preserve Rare species of plant ?
Copies of the plant can be made by taking the stem cells from the meristem and growing the into clones
