Six aspects of culture shock
Anxiety resulting from losing all familiar signs and symbols of social intercourse
- strain (psychological adaptations)
- sense of loss and deprivation
- reject new culture
- role confusion
- surprise and anxiety
- feelings of impotence
- four stages of shock: honeymoon stage, crisis stage, recovery and adjustment
- different types of shock: invasion shock (what a sojourner wears may disrespect locals), reverse shock (go home), business shock (realisation that subtle business practices vary between cultures) and race and culture shock

A
3 stages of adaption comparing feelings of emotion of sojourner to situation in home culture
- remain negative
- bicultural adapted
- visitor goes native
- cognitive aetiology - misinterpretation of cultural values and norms e.g. collectivist and individualist
- behavioural aetiology - do not know systems of rewards
- phenomenological aetiology - state of low to high self esteem and cultural awareness - cannot use own cultural references, politeness and self identity
- socio-psychological aetiology - feelings of well being in host culture, social adjustment
