what is anthropology?
the study of humanity through the study of culture (the learned, shared understanding of human behavior and beliefs and what those mean)
what are the three rules of participant observation?
- participate and observe
- live their for 12+ months
- must speak their language
what is agency?
the power that people have to determine the course of their own lives
what is stratification?
inequality
(hierarchical relationships between different groups, usually based off inequality and access to wealth, power, and prestige)
what is social justice?
balancing individuals needs and society by reducing or eliminating stratification
what is economic justice?
set of principles used to judge right and wrong when establishing systems of production, distribution, and consumption of resources
what is ethnocentrism?
the tendency to look at the world primarily from the perspective of one’s own culture.
what is culture relativism?
not judging a culture to our own standards of what is right or wrong, strange or normal
what is weak culture relativism?
you tend to judge others from the perspective that your culture is the “norm”
what is inequality?
power and access imbalances that disadvantage one group or a group of individuals based on their membership in a particular group in society.
(stratification)
what are human rights?
rights based on justice and morality beyond and superior to particular countries, religions, and culture
(rights everyone has)
what is culture shock?
a feeling of uncertainty or anxiety that affects people that are immersed in a culture that is different or new.
