Culture, disability and Physical activity Flashcards
sustainable global development goal
By 2030, reduce one their premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment and promote mental health and well-being.
Physical activity levels in LMICs?
- Despite evidence on its benefits, promotion of physical activity in LMICs gathering little attention.
- research has shown low levels of activity
what factors have increased sedentary lifestyles and decline in PA levels
- Epidemiological transition, economic growth, mechanization of work and transport and urbanization
what barriers are there for LMICs?
- social norms-especially for women
- perceived expected behaviour from girls
-family priorities
-time constraints
-weather
-affordability and accessibility
-motivation
planning to ensure SDG are?
ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all ages, empower women and girls, to promote inclusion and reduce equality and sustainable cities.
Guidelines for disabilities ?
- recommended doing strength activities on 2 or more days a week
-at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic Pa each week for substantial health gains
Problems with guidelines
- Some Pa is better than nothing as small amounts bring health benefits and the 150 mins message alone can be daunting, especially for disabled adults who are mostly inactive
Aims for PA within disability
- To maximise the impact of national and global Pa guidelines, and reduce participation inequalities, inclusive and effective programme design is essential. Communication also needs to be consider with many message being ableist.
Is there a difference in Pa levels in LIC and HIC?
LIC, have more activity in work and transport than HIC.
access to technology etc is higher in HIC due to more iconic spending e.g. blades etc
What is global pattern for Pa?
- Men have higher insufficient Pa levels in central and eastern Europe and east and south Asia and Latin America and Caribbean
- Females have higher insufficient Pa levels in Central, middle, north Africa, Oceania.
What factors could lead to difference in Pa levels?
-cultural norms, traditional roles, or lack of social and community support might lead to reduced participation in physical activity among girls and women.
-Along with reduced leisure time activity and completion of lower aerobic activity completed by females.
why is it hard to measure Pa within disability
- definition of disability carries across sectors
- self-report methods are most common measurement. however these have little validity and reliability
- due to heavy emphasis place of walking
why is there so little data about children with disabilities ?
98% of children with disabilities in LMICs do not attend school, school- based assessments of physical activity are unfeasible.
How can technology increase Pa within disability?
- Technology may make physical activity more accessible to those with disabilities. Facilities that have the ability to facilitate the needs if these individuals. Equipment that is suited to the individual’s needs will allow them to access a wider range of physical activities.
-Technology may result in increase information available to the PWLD, thus increase the percentage that partake in Pa.
is there a problem with using technology to increase Pa levels ?
-Cost is a major problem, even for HIC these can result in lack of money directed towards equipment and increasing technology. As a result, LIC are going to be negatively affected due to ability to afford the technology.
- disabilities vary massively and thus technology needs to be different for each disability.
