What is culture?
set of ideas, behaviours, attitudes and traditions that exist within large groups of people; often passed into the next generations.
What did Brofenbrenner develop?
Ecological model of a child’s development
What is the Microsystem?
The immediate context in which a child is involved eg peers
What is the Mesosystem?
The variety of environments the child encounters eg home, nursery.
What is the Exosystem?
The context which affects the child as they interact with the child’s microsystems eg the parent’s work
What is the Macrosystem?
The culture in which the child grows up, this affects all the other systems and how the child views the world.
What does Afrocentric mean?
Emphasising African culture on the development of Western civilisation
What does Eurocentric mean?
Reflecting the tendency to interpret the World in terms of European values.
What is a collectivist culture?
Culture where needs of community and group are most valued.
What is an Individualist value?
A culture that focuses on an individual’s needs eg western cultures.
What does ethnocentric mean?
The process of evaluating other cultures based on preconceptions of own culture.
