What is culture bias
Tendency to judge all people in terms of your own cultural assumptions. This distorts or biases your judgement.
What is cultural relativism
The view that behaviour cannot be judged properly unless it is viewed in the context of the culture it originates
Alpha bias
There are differences between cultures
Collectivist vs individualist
Beta bias
Ignoring or minimising cultural differences
Eg. Intelligence testing (IQ)
Ethnocentrism
Seeing things from the point of view of ourselves and our social groups.
Alpha bias in ethnocentrism
One’s own culture is considered to be ‘better’ or different, therefore devaluing other cultures.
Eg - attachment and dependency is seen as bad while independence is good.
Beta Bias in ethnocentrism
Ethnocentrism can lead to beta bias of view is believed to be the only view
Eg - IQ testing
Solutions to culture bias
-indigenous psychologies - different theories for different cultures
-world wide psychology community
Consequences of culture bias
-Emit-Etic distinction- focus on culture specific phenomena
-can create/reinforce stereotypes
