Norms
Are expected patterns of behaviour that are based on the values of a culture
Values
are beliefs and ideas that society sees as important, and that are accepted by the majority of society
Cultural hybridity
A mix of different cultures. For example, England has people of Scottish, Irish, Welsh, American, Asian, Carribean decent /cultures
Subculture
A smaller group of people within a culture, who share distinctive norms and values, within a wider culture.
Cultural diversity
Refers to the differences and variety found in societies.
High Culture
Refers to cultural products and activities that are seen to have a very high status / value “creative”
Popular culture
Refers to cultural products and activities that are enjoyed by the majority of a population.
Consumer Culture
Significant today-
Many people buy branded products in a blatent attempt to construct an identity and gain status in the eyes of others.
Meads study
Studied several tribal cultures in Samoa and New Guinea. One area that mead studied was male and female behaviour, and gender role expectations.
