what are subcultures?
entire social groups that behave differently to the majority of people within wider society
what is identity?
the distinctive characteristics of a person’s character, or the character of a group which relate to who they are and what is meaningful to them
what is cultural identity?
being able to associate with and feel like part of a group based on its culture
what is primary identity?
qualities that makes a person who they are
what is secondary identity?
a persons sense of who they are based on their group membership
what is sex?
biological differences between males and females
what is gender?
cultural expectations associated with ‘femininity’ and ‘masculinity’
what is ethnicity?
- refers to a type of social identity based on cultural background, shared lifestyles and shared experiences
- may include language, a sense of shared history or ancestry, religion, shared beliefs and values
what is nationality?
the rights and responsibilities attached to being a citizen of a nation (where someone lives)
