- although spanking is viewed as physical punishment, some cultural groups continue to believe in the use of strict discipline and physical punishment for children
- the choice of discipline is strongly influenced by cultural and religious beliefs, personal experiences, and prevailing practices

- children need guidance in their lives, someone who they can count on, have the power to meet their needs, and trust to point the, in the direction they go
- in some cultures it’s the elders in the community, grandparent, religious leader, aunt/uncle

- mother tongue: first language you learned, the language a baby hears from birth
- language is the first dimension of the child’s culture transmitted by the parent
- every culture has a version of baby talk, nursery rhymes, and baby songs
