what is ethnicity?
an identity based on sharing a common social and cultural heritage (i.e. hispanic, latino, spanish)
what is race?
identity based on biological similarities (i.e. white, african american, asian indian, etc.)
what are the main cultural concepts?
socialization, acculturation, assimilation, ethnocentrism, dominant culture, subculture, and minority group
what is socialization?
when you learn about another member of a group or culture
what is acculturation?
someone from another culture that adopts new attributes of a new culture (i.e. immigration)
what is assimilation?
when someone takes on values of the dominant culture
what is ethnocentrism?
when someone thinks their beliefs/culture is superior
what is dominant culture?
the culture with the most power
what is subculture?
a smaller group within a larger group
what is minority group?
a cultural group with fewer members than the majority group
what is folk medicine?
alternative medicine that is guided by cultural and religious beliefs (no scientific evidence)
what is complementary medicine?
complement conventional medicine (i.e. accupuncture)
what is alternative medicine?
used with no medical equipment or interventions, but no yet validated by testing (i.e. aromatherapy)
what are the components of Campinha-Bacote’s Model of culture competence?
cultural awareness (self evaluation)
cultural knowledge (learn about other cultures)
cultural skill
cultural encounter
cultural desire (do they want to interact with other cultures?)
what is important to include in a cultural assessment as a nurse?
interview/health Hx (establish relationship, ask open ended Q’s, ask about herbals/supplements that are culturally appropriate)
