Culture
shared system of beliefs, values, and behavioral expectations that provides social structure for daily living
Subculture
a large group of people who are members of the larger cultural group but who have certain ethnic, occupational, or physical characteristics that are not common to the larger culture
Cultural Diversity
what can cultural diversity incude?
the coexistence of different ethnic, sex assigned at birth, racial, and socioeconomic groups within one social unit.
- include:
-> people of varying religion
-> language
-> physical size
-> sexual orientation
-> age
-> disability
-> occupational status
-> geographic location
Cultural Respect
enables nurses to deliver services that are respectful of and responsive to the health beliefs, practices, and cultural and linguistic needs of diverse patients
Ethnicity
sense of identification with a collective cultural group; based on common heritage.
Race
typically based on specific physical characteristics such as skin pigmentation, body stature, facial features, and hair texture
What are the Federal Standards for Race Classification? What races are includes in this?
- provide opportunity for people to identify themselves in multiple categories.
- Include:
-> American Indian, Native American or Alaskan Native
-> Asian
-> Black or African American
-> White
-> Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander
Stereotyping
when one assumes that all members of a culture, ethnic group, or race act alike
Cultural Imposition
A situation where one culture forces their values and beliefs onto another culture or subculture
Cultural Blindness
occurs when one ignores differences and proceeds as though they do not exist
Cultural Conflict
occurs when people become aware of cultural differences, feel threatened, and respond by ridiculing the beliefs and traditions of others to make themselves feel more secure about their own values
Implicit Bias
when we hold attitudes toward people or associate stereotypes with them without our conscious knowledge
Dominant Groups
has the most ability to control the values and sanctions of the society. It usually is (but does not have to be) the largest group in the society.
Minority Groups
have some physical or cultural characteristic (such as race, religious beliefs, or occupation) different from those of the dominant group.
Cultural Assimilation/Acculturation
when a minority group lives within a dominant group, and many members may lose the cultural characteristics that once made them different, and they may take on the values of the dominant culture
Cultural Shock
what a person may experience when placed in a different culture they perceive as strange
Personal space
the area around a person regarded as part of the person
Ethnocentrism
the belief that the ideas, beliefs, and practices of one’s own culture are far superior to those of others culture
Cultural Humility
involves recognizing diversity and power imbalances, being open and self-aware, and focusing on learning from others
Poverty
A person of family whose income falls below an established threshold
