Douglas (1966)
Said underachievement was due to lack of parental interest. Found that m/c are more likely to go to their child’s parents evening.
Feinstein (2003)
Also supports Douglas’ ideas but his experiment was more up to date - teacher assessment of parental interest.
Sugarman (1970)
Suggests that working class have a subculture and different values and attitudes to m/c.
Fatalistic
a belief in fate - nothing you can do to change your status, no point in even trying.
Collectivistic
valuing being part of a group more than individual success.
Present time orientated
Seeing the present as more important than the future.
Immediate gratification
seeking pleasure now rather than making sacrifices to get bigger success in the future.
