  • Mistrust-Patient may with hold important information because their culture or beliefs may not be respected.
  • Language and Literacy- English may be a second language, not using lay terminology and not speaking at 5-8th grade level
  • Religion- values and beliefs may limit options to a patient, such as dispensing birth control
  • Preconceived perceptions- patient already knows but in reality they don’t “I know this, I read this..”
