Define race
The biologic/genetic characteristics that we tend to see with a a particular group
(but there are subsets within this group).
Define ethnicity and how it differs from race
Ethnicity is more flexible – not just racial heritage – but also cultural heritage – including religious and linguistics backgrounds.
Define culture and how it differs from ethnicity
The collection of beliefs, customs, traditions, arts, social hierarchies, societal norms, experience, values, attitudes, and material traits of a particular racial, religious, or societal group
Biggest difference between ethnicity and culture is that ethnicity considers race a little more (it is the middle ground).
Through the lens of ethnicity, how has the US population been evolving? Where ethnicity it expected to double by 2050?
Increase in non-white racial/ethnic groups.
Hispanic population is going to double by 2050.
What race/ethnicity is MC for cystic fibrosis? Beta thalassemia? Sickle cell?
CF = European
Beta thal: Mediterranean
Sickle: African American
not exclusive to these groups though
Are Hispanic patients skeptical about receiving medicine from someone of a different ethnic background?
No. 75-80% of Hispanics say it would not make a difference
What race of patients are more likely to have employer/private insurance?
White patients
For women 15-44, what 2 ethnicities/races have the lowest healthcare coverage?
Hispanic and black
What race has the highest distrust in public institutions? Which don’t?
Blacks have highest distrust
Whites and Hispanics have the lowest
Define cultural competency
Behaviors, attitudes, and values that recognize there are differences in cultural backgrounds and plan care accordingly.
