what is cultural bias
the tendency to interpret all phenomena through the lens of ones own culture, ignoring the effects that cultural differences might have on behaviour
what is ethnocentrism
belief in the superiority of one’s own cultural group, resulting in the assumption that their culturally specific practices are ‘right’
psychologists should be aware of cultural relitivism, what is this
understanding the cultural context in which the study was conducted in, to see if the findings can be applied beyond that culture or not.
what is emic research
set of assumptions particular to a specific culture so they vary from place to place
what is etic research
looks at behaviour outside of a given culture and attempts to describe that behaviour as universal
what is an imposed etic
where a culture-specific idea is wrongly imposed on another culture.
