Cultural and Material Depravation Flashcards
(Intellectual Development)
Douglas.
Found that w/c pupils scored lower on ability tests than m/c. Argues this is because w/c parents don’t spend enough time supporting their children’s intellectual development with educational activities.
What are the main ideas behind cultural depravation?
- Primary socialisation gives children the skills they need to succeed at school. E.g, language, self-discipline and reasoning.
- CD theorists argue that w/c families don’t socialise their children adequately in 3 areas.
(Intellectual Development)
Bernstein and Young.
Agreed with Douglas. Also argue that m/c parents are more likely to buy the right kind of toys to encourage thinking and reasoning.
(Language)
Bereiter and Englemann.
Found in w/c homes language was less eloquent, and they used gestures, single words and disjointed phrases. Argues that this meant children did not gain abstract thinking ideas.
(Language)
Bernstein.
- Studied language in different homes. Found - w/c usually used restricted code and m/c elaborated.
- Elaborated Code - Code of education, therefore w/c find it harder to learn.
(Attitudes and Values)
Douglas.
- W/c parents place less value on education.
- W/c were less ambitious for their children.
- Children were less motivated as a result.
(Attitudes and Values)
Feinstein.
Argues m/c do better because their parents provide their children with motivation/discipline/support.
(Criticisms of CD)
Keddie.
- Myth that blames the victims of a class based system.
- Argues w/c children are culturally different, not deprived, and that they fail because the Ed. System is dominated by m/c values.
(Criticisms of CD)
Blackstone and Mortimer.
- Reject the idea that parents aren’t interested in their children.
- Argue that w/c parents don’t attend parents evenings and other events is because of the prejudiced atmosphere.
Material Depravation.
Refers to a lack of material necessities.
Factors that can affect children’s education:
- Housing.
- Overcrowding - no room to do educational activities and homework.
- Cold/damp housing - may cause ill health.
- Temporary bed and breakfast accommodation - means moving frequently and changes of school.
- Diet and Health.
Howard.
Young w/c pupils have lower energy/less vitamins and minerals/find it hard to concentrate.
(Diet and Health)
Wilkinson.
W/c - more emotional/behavioural problems.
- Financial Support and the cost of Education.
Bull.
Lack of financial support means less equipment/school trips - refers to this as the ‘cost of free schooling’.
(Financial support and cost of Ed.)
Tanner.
Items such as uniforms/computers/art equipment places a heavy burden on w/c families.
