Cube algorithm definitions Flashcards
What does R mean in an alogrithm?
R = right
When you see the R that is a signal to turn the right side of the cube clockwise one turn; (R2 or RR would mean turning the right side of the cube clockwise twice)

What does R’ mean in an algorithm?
R’ = right inverted
When you see the R’ that is a signal to turn the right side of the cube counter-clockwise one turn; (R’2 or R’R’ would mean turning the right side of the cube counter-clockwise twice)

What does U mean in an algorithm?
U = up
When you see the U that is a signal to turn the top side of the cube clockwise one turn; (U2orUU would mean turning the top side of the cube clockwise twice)

What does U’ mean in an algorithm?
U’ = up inverted
When you see the U’ that is a signal to turn the top side of the cube counter-clockwise one turn; (U‘2orU‘U’ would mean turning the top side of the cube counter-clockwise twice)

What does B mean in an algorithm?
B = back
When you see the B that is a signal to turn the back side of the cube clockwise one turn; (B2orBB would mean turning the back side of the cube clockwise twice)

What does D’ mean in an algorithm?
D’ = down inverted
When you see the D’ that is a signal to turn the cube bottom side of the cube counter-clockwise one turn; (D’2orD’D’** would mean turning the bottom side of the cube counter-clockwise twice)

What does D mean in an algorithm?
D = down
When you see the D that is a signal to turn the cube bottom side of the cube clockwise one turn; (D2orDD** would mean turning the bottom side of the cube clockwise twice)

What does L mean in an algorithm?
L = left
When you see the L that is a signal to turn the left side of the cube clockwise one turn; (L2orLL would mean turning the left side of the cube clockwise twice)

What does L’ mean in an algorithm?
L’ = left inverted
When you see the L’ that is a signal to turn the left side of the cube counter-clockwise one turn; (L’2orL’L’ would mean turning the left side of the cube counter-clockwise twice)

What does F’ mean in an algorithm?
F’ = front inverted
When you see the F’ that is a signal to turn the front side of the cube counter-clockwise one turn; (F’2 or F’F’ would mean turning right side of the cube counter-clockwise twice)

What does F mean in an algorithm?
F = front
When you see the F that is a signal to turn the front side of the cube clockwise one turn; (F2 or FF would mean turning right side of the cube clockwise twice)

What side is typically facing forward on most six-sided cubes when starting most algorithms?
White is most common for beginner instructions
Note: every cuber has their preference and can start with any side forward - there are no rules. Most instructions on how to solve a 3x3 cube will start with white facing forward.
Which sides are opposite to each other in most cubes?
Red is opposite to Orange
White is opposite to Yellow
Blue is opposite to Green
What are corner pieces?
Corner pieces are the pieces that have three sides/colors showing. When looking at a cube, these are the four outside corners.
What are the edge pieces?
The edge pieces are the pieces between the corner pieces and they have two sides showing.
How many edge pieces are there?
There are 12 edge pieces.
How many corner pieces are there?
There are 8 corner pieces.
What are center pieces?
Center pieces are pieces in the middle of the cube that make up the core. There is only one side showing.
How many center pieces are there?
There are 6 center pieces.
What is the first layer of a cube?
The first layer of the cube is any third of the cube you choose to solve first.
What is the second layer of a cube?
The second layer means: the layer between the first and third layers.
What is the third layer of the cube?
The third layer of the cube is the last layer of the cube to be solved after the first and second layers of the cube.
What is the easiest way to decide which side of the cube to start solving first?
To decide, this would be the order of priority:
- Pieces of the color that you want to solve first, specifically edge pieces;
- Pair the edge up with the center you are solving first and the other color of the edge should be paired up with that coler center
