Q

Why is an FBS not very accurate in telling if a baby is compromised and to what degree?

A

Catecholamines are released in response to fetal hypoxia - this stimulates the release of adrenaline, therefore blood goes to vital organs and scalp is poorly perfused
However you can trust it if it is positive result and says baby is well

Q

What does variability show?

A

Parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system determines variability therefore if abnormal there’s reduced brain function and baby is hypoxic

Q

Important things to remember

A

It’s still possible to pick up MP with an FSE
When there’s an acceleration with every contraction check it’s not MP in response to pain
Accelerations in 2nd stage = NOT NORMAL- could be MP
If worried about whether MP or FH and can’t be reassured- doctor for scan
Propess only licensed for use in prmips and only once
Early decels- only late 1st/ early 2nd stage - only caused by cord compression
Variable decels - are neither early nor late
Late decels - lowest point of decel 20 secs after contraction
Intubation makes mother’s BP very high (cat 1 under GA)
