CT scans Flashcards
What is the other name of a CT scan?
CAT scan
Why are CT scanners important?
X-ray images that are used to create detailed images of internal organs, bones, soft tissue and blood vessels
How are CT scans different?
The computer takes cross-sectional images, displaying the different densities as various shades of grey
How does the CT scan work
Patient lays on a bed that moves through the donut-shaped structure called a gantry
What is inside the x-ray scanner?
Inside of the CT scanner there is an x-ray detector and x-ray source which rotates around the patient. This sends a thin beam
of x-rays through the body.
What are 4 components of CT scans?
*Patient preparation/ positioning
* Scanning (ALARA principle)
* Imaging
* Data storage
In what planes can CT scanners reconstruct?
Reconstruct images in
different planes i.e. Axial,
Coronal, Sagittal or
more
Why is contrast important?
Contrast increases the density of blood- it highlights blood vessels
that are otherwise difficult to see
It also shows functional
information about tissues
List some advantages of CT over x-ray
- Higher Dose but greater detail
- Three-dimensional image
- Relatively fast
- Good for trauma
What is the most common plane that patients are scanned in?
Axial
How are CT Scans beneficial compared to other forms?
- Great bony detail
- Rapidly advancing tech
- Excellent spatial and
contrast resolution - Ability to reconstruct in
multiple planes and identify vasculature
How are CT scans harmful?
High radiation dose + Expensive to purchase and
maintain
