CT Flashcards
How does CT work?
X-ray tube emits photons
What are some advantages of CT?
- Faster
- Finer detail - Thin slices
- No problem of superimposition
- Useful in cases where infection has not cleared up
What is ascites?
Build up of fluids between the layers of tissue surrounding organs in the abdomen
What do the the layers of tissue surrounding organs in the abdomen?
And how many layers are there
Two layers that produce a small amount of fluid for smooth organ movement
What does acute blood show on a CT brain scan?
Bright white units
What can happen when blood is in compartments of the brain?
It irritates the meningeal layers
What are some disadvantages of CT?
- High radiation dose
- Chance of allergy
- More expensive
- Nephrotoxic potential damage to kidneys
What are the contents of a CT scanner?
- X-ray tube
- Detectors
- Filtration
- Collimators
What materials are used for filtration in CT?
Usually copper or aluminum
What does air appear as on a CT scan?
Black
What does bone appear as on a CT scan?
White
What are some safety precautions in CT?
- Radiation warning rights
- Ensure doors are locked
- Watching scanner for timings
- Names of patients on scanner panels
What is an abdominal aortic aneurysm?
Bulge or swelling of the aorta that can get bigger over time and potentially burst
What symptoms can indicate a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm?
- Shortness of breath
- Dizziness
- Sweating
- Pale skin
What is CT colonography (CTC)?
A procedure involving a small tube in the rectum for imaging the colon
What preparation is needed for CT colonography?
Patients need to use laxatives to empty the bowels beforehand
How are scans taken during CT colonography?
With the patient in at least two different positions
What can be confirmed through CT colonography?
Whether abnormalities are fecal matter or polyps
