Weak Forms
Reduced phonation of a word
Usually function words.
Strong Forms
Word when said in isolation
Elision of /t/ and /d/
Deletion of /t/ or /d/
- Must be in coda of a syllable
- Must be be after and before a consonant (except /h/)
- Preceeding consonant must match in voicing
Elision of /h/
Deletion of /h/
- Occurs in unstressed function words
- It must not occur at the beginning of a sentence
Word internal elision
Deletion of consonant sounds within words
- Must be between consonants
- Preceeding consonant must match in voicing
Linking /r/
Liason - /ɹ/ added to separate two vowels next to each other
OPTIONAL (/ʔ/ can be used instead)
Words that aren’t usually pronounced with a have an /ɹ/ added e.g. /faɹ əweɪ/.
Intrusive /r/
Liason - /ɹ/ added to separate two vowels next to each other
Assimilation of voice
Change in voice
Voiced fricatives become voiceless before voiceless sounds.
Dealveolarisation (plosives and nasals)
Change in Place
Alveolar nasals and plosives become:
- Velars before velars
- Bilabials before bilabials, and labial-velars
NB: If there is a homorganic sequence, first plosive is unreleased.

Alveolar fricative become postalveolar before:
- Postalveolars
- Palatals
Labiodental stop formation

/tdn/ become [p̪b̪m̪] before /fv/.
Coalescence

Two sounds combine into one.
Only occurs to /tdsz/ before /j/. Become / t͡ʃ d͡ʒ or ʒ/.
