Causes
July 2010- more than half the normal rains fell in just one week, 200mm in just 4 days.
The River Indus was chocked with sediment supplied by Himalayan Headwater
Raised Levées and protected banks contained sediment and reduced river capacity.
Deforestation lead to less interception
India was responsible for releasing water from tens of its dams into the river
Impacts
150,000km^2 flooded, 1/5 of Pakistan.
Over 1700 died, 20 million affected through damage to property
1.2 million homes destroyed
800,000 cut off from aid, 6 million suffering from hunger.
69,000km^2 of Pakistan’s most fertile farmland flooded
200,000 livestock killed
€35 billion total damages
10,000 schools destroyed
Management
By the end of August, $687 million of humanitarian aid had been donated by a UN appeal
