Characteristics of aid project summary
Riders for Health is an international non-governmental organisation (NGO) that ensures all health workers in Kenya (now most of Africa) have reliable transportation to deliver medicine and healthcare to the most isolated people
Characteristics
Manage and maintain vehicles used in medicine delivery to ensure Zero-breakdown vehicles
Involves locals, trains them, so that the service can be self-sufficient
First international programme 1991 in Lesotho
2010- Riders for Health employed 275 in Africa, maintained more than 1400 vehicles and enabled health workers to reach 10.8 million people
2002- Gambian government placed Riders for Health as the country’s entire Health transportation service
Ducati donated $1 for every bike they sell (~40,000 a year)
Honda donated 75 motorcycles
How is it sustainable?
Involves local people ho are taught how to maintain the service and gain knowledge in technology
Locals are trained by a local technician to maintain, ride and keep the vehicles and a self sufficient service
The health workers are able to see those in need more often, improving health in remote areas
Cost of running fleets has reduced due to Riders for Health.
Zimbabwe- 62% reeducation in annual motorcycle fleet maintenance cost per 1000 people reached by health workers
