Crystal induced arthropathies Flashcards
What are the two most common crystal-induced arthropathies?
gout and CPPD
what is chondrocalcinosis?
calcification of menisci or articular cartilage
it is NOT considered a specific enough diagnosis
what age group typically gets CPPD?
> 50 years
CPPD is associated with several distinct metabolic disorders. What are they?
hemochromatosis hyperparathyroidism gout diabetes DJD
what are the chondrocalcinosis etiologies? (3Cs)
cartilage degeneration
crystal deposition
cation disease
what are the common cation diseases?
hemochromatosis (iron)
hyperparathyroidism (calcium)
wilson’s disease (copper)
what radiographic clues are there for CPPD?
linear calcifications of hyaline or fibrocartilage
degeneration of cartilage and articular alterations
cystic change
scapholunate joint calcification
what are the most common areas for CPPD?
fibrocartilage of knee triangular fibrocartilage of wrist MCPs (large pseudocysts) symphysis pubis labrum of acetabulum
clinical findings for CPPD
similar to DJD
chronic progressive joint pain, intermittent swelling, reduced ROM and crepitus
acute attacks interspersed by chronic progression
symptoms of CPPD (pseudogout)
sudden, intense joint pain
swollen joint that’s warm to the touch
red or purple skin around the joint
severe tenderness around the joint
what is a pyrophysphate arthropathy?
CPPD + DJD
hemochromatosis
an inherited disease that causes the body to abdorb and store too much iron
where is excess iron stored in the body with hemochromatosis?
pancreas, skin, liver, heart
hemochromatosis is also known as?
bronze diabetes
hemochromatosis has a triad. what is it?
cirrhosis, diabetes, bronze colored skin
