Cryptography Flashcards
What does the Caesar cipher do
It encrypts messages by moving the alphabet to the left or right by a certain number of places.
What is a ‘key’
The direction and number of places moved
What is the key used for
It is used to decrypt the message by moving the alphabet the same number of spaces but the opposite way
The top line is the…..
Decrypted letters
The bottom line is the….
Encrypted letters
What is a barcode
A series of bars and spaces that when read by a laser can be used to store details about a product
How do they work
Barcodes use a series of numbers and check digit to make sure the bars and spaces have not been damaged
What information can a barcode store
Product identification
Size/weight of product
Who manufactured the product
Where the product has come from
What does PGP stand for
Pretty
Good
Privacy
How many keys does it use and what are they
It uses two keys
A public key
A private key
What is a public key
It is a cryptographic key that anyone can use to encrypt messages.
Private key
Whatever is encrypted with the public key may only be decrypted with the private key (vice versa)
Cannot be copies
PGP encryption
Encryption program that provides cryptographic privacy for data communication
Used two keys to keep messages safe
