which can be shared under the same licence and terms as the original software
supported by strong community
examples are firefox, android, explorer
Advantages of open sourced software
usually free adapted to fit users needs made for the greater good, no profit reliable and secure creative and innovative
Disadvantages of open sourced software
small projects wont get regular updates
limited user documentation
no warranties if something goes wrong
no customer support
What is closed sourced software
compiled code only
licence restricts modification, copying and redistribution of the software
businesses often use to have better customer support options
eg Office, Windows, Outlook
Advantages of closed sourced software
comes with warranty
well tested and reliable (companies fix with regular updates) and usually cheaper for companies than developing their own customer built software
Disadvantages of closed sourced software
expensive, not exactly fit users needs
not maintain older software when warranties expire (want you to buy their latest products)
