What happened during the Battle of Inab?
- Nur al Din planned a siege of Fort Inab
- Raymond of Antioch heard of the news, quickly setting off an army to relieve Inab
- when the franks arrived in Inab, there was no one to be seen - so Raymond thought he and his troops scared the Muslims off
- this was not the case
- it reached night time and the Muslims were still not there, so Raymond and his troops camped for the night, not far from the fort of Inab
- as dawn broke, the franks found themselves surrounded by Muslims
- it was a surprise attack
- the Muslims win and Nur al Din kept Raymond’s head as a reward

What happened in September 1149?
Nur al Din had the perfect opportunity to begin his seizure of northern Syria. The leader of Damascus fell ill, dying a couple weeks later. Damascus was now without a leader, giving Nur al Din a chance to besiege it in honour of his father, however he was unable to go through with this plan. Nur al din’s brother Sayf Al Din also died. NAD had to travel north to possess his new belongings - leaving Damascus behind
Why was Outremer a mess during 1150?
- calls were made to the west for another crusade but they were left answered
- Raymond died leading to a succession crisis
- Raymond’s son (Bohemond III) was only five so there was no legitimate heir
- Constance (Raymond’s widow) refused to marry again
- Baldwin III of Jerusalem was forced to rule all surviving crusader states and Tripoli after the leader had just been assassinated
- Melisande (Baldwin III’s mother) wanted to rule Jerusalem - this ruined the relationship between the two
What tactic did Nur al Din develop?
He became more in tune with allah, creating a more peaceful environment for him and his troops. He disciplined his troops more, preventing them from unnecessarily killing people.

- he cut off the shipments travelling to Damascus
- the people of Damascus were starved
- when he arrived in Damascus to attack, no one was there to oppose him
- the people of Damascus willingly surrendered the city to Nur al Din
