Crus O,I,A,N Flashcards
Craniolateral muscles
Cranial tibial
Fibularis longus (rum/carn)
Long digital extensor
Lateral digital extensor
Fibularis tertius (rum/carn)
Caudal muscles
Gastrocnemius
Soleus (Eq, cat)
Caudal tibial
Popliteus
Superficial digital flexor
Deep digital flexor
Nerve supply for craniolateral muscles
Fibular (peroneal) nerve
Innervation of caudal muscles
Tibial nerve
Cranial tibial
Origin - lateral tibial condyle
Insertion - medial plantar surface of MT 1&2
Action - flexes hock, rotates paw (supination)
Nerve - Fibular
Long digital extensor
Origin - ext fossa of femur
Insertion - dorsal surface of digits
Action - flexor of hock & extensor of digits
Nerve - Fibular nerve
Lateral digital extensor
Origin - proximolateral aspect of fibula, lateral collateral lig of stifle joint
Insertion - joints tendon of LDE, attaching to distal phalanx of 5 digit
Action - ext and abductor of 5th digit
Nerve - Fibular nerve
Fibularis brevis
Origin - lateral surface of tibia and fibula @ mid shaft level
Insertion - proximal end of MTV
Action - flex hock
Nerve - Fibular nerve
Fibularis longus
Part of triangular belly, absent in horse
Origin - proximal tibia & fibula
Insertion - 4th Tarsal bone, plantar MT
Action - flexor of tarsus, pronator of paw
Nerve - Fibular nerve
Gastrocnemius
Two heads
Origin - distocaudal surface of femur
Insertion - calcanean tuberosity
Action - extends tarsus and flex stifle
Nerve - tibial nerve
Soleus
Absent in dog, present in cat & Eq
Origin - head of fibula
Insertion - tendon of lateral head of gasto
Action - extends tarsus
Nerve - tibial nerve
SDF
Origin - lateral supracondylar tuberosity of femur, tendon wraps medially around gastro tendon
Insertion - calcaneus
Action - acts on all 3 joints - flex stifle, digit, extend hock
Nerve - tibial nerve
DDF
Origin - proximally from caudal surface of tibia and fibula
Insertion - plantar surface of distal phalanx
Action - no action on stifle
Nerve - tibial nerve
DDF in dogs
Lateral head - larger, flexor hallucis longus
Medial head - smaller
DDF in large animals
Lateral and medial heads + caudal tibial muscle
