Q

What is fractional distillation?

A

Separates the compounds in a hydrocarbon at different boiling points.

The larger the molecule the higher the boiling point

Q

Explain the fractional distillation column

A

Crude oil is vaporised and fed into the bottom of the column.
Hot at the bottom, cold at the top
From bottom to top:
Residue, diesel, kerosene, petrol, petroleum
Temp at bottom is 350 degrees
Temp at top is 50 degrees

Q

What two methods are used to remove the amount of sulfur dioxide produced by burning fuels?

A

Sulfur removed from fuels before sent for purchase

Exhausts in cars have catalytic convertors that remove carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide
