Crude Oil Flashcards
Where is crude oil found?
Deep inside rock
What is crude oil?
A mixture of many different compounds
Is crude oil easily separated?
Yes
What is special about liquid compound?
They each have their own boiling point
What is boiling point?
A temperature at which a liquid turns into a gas
How could you separate a 3 liquid compound?
By heating the mixture up to each individual compounds boiling point and then let it Cool through a tide and condense back into a liquid
What is the method call to separate 3 liquid compounds?
Distillation
What could you say about a liquid with a boiling point of 70 degrees?
1) highly flammable
2) Low viscosity
3) The molecules are the smallest- hydrocarbon molecules
What could you say about a liquid with a boiling point of 350 degrees?
1) Low flammability
2) High Viscosity
3) The molecules are large- hydrocarbon molecules
What does viscosity mean?
The thickness of something
How does fractional distillation work?
Pump in the crude oil, heat it up to very high temp, then oil of the compounds in the crude oil will evaporate, then the gas will rise up the tower where it is cooler, then condense into a liquid and separated into it’s different compounds
What happens if you have small molecules?
1) You have low boiling point
2) You have low viscosity and high flammability
What happens if you have a large molecule?
1) high boiling point
2) high viscosity
3) high flammability
