Burning Hydrocarbon Fuels Flashcards
What things require hydrocarbons?
Ships and planes etc
What 3 chemicals are given off when we burn hydrocarbons?
1) sulphur dioxide
2) nitrogen oxides
3) particulates soot (carbon)
What happens when you burn fuels at a really high temp?
You produce nitrogen oxides in the air
What does nitrogen oxides produce?
Acid rain
What happens when particulates build up in the air?
They cause global dimming
What do hydrocarbons contain?
Carbon and hydrogen
What is it called when we require oxygen to burn the hydrocarbons?
Oxidised
What does CO2 contribute to?
Global warming
What happen when there is low amounts of oxygen reacting with hydrocarbons?
You form incomplete combustion
What does incomplete combustion lead to?
Carbon monoxide which is a harmful gas
