Crude Oil Flashcards
What is crude oil mainly made up of?
Hydrocarbons.
What is a hydrocarbon?
A molecule made up of just carbon and hydrogen.
How is crude oil separated out into its different fractions?
Fractional distillation.
If a molecule is short, how viscous is it?
Less viscous.
If a molecule is short, how volatile is it?
More volatile.
If a molecule is short, how high is its boiling temperature?
Low.
If a molecule is short, how flammable is it?
Very.
What is an alkane?
A saturated hydrocarbon.
What are the first four alkanes?
Methane, ethane, propane and butane.
Why do crude oil fractions make good fuels?
They burn cleanly.
Apart from fuels, what is crude oil also used for?
Various chemicals, like plastics.
Why are crude oil fractions the easiest thing to use?
- Things are set up for it e.g petrol engines
2. Reliable
How are new oil reserves being found?
New technology means we can now extract oil that was once too difficult or expensive.
Why are oil spills bad for the local environment?
Wildlife is poisoned.
What is the equation for fuel combustion?
Hydrocarbon + Oxygen –> Carbon dioxide + Water vapour (+ energy)
