crude oil Flashcards
what is the definition of crude oil?
crude oil is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons (hydrogen and carbon atoms only) that consist of different chain lengths
what are the stages of how crude oil is made:
- millions of years ago, small marine animals and plants fell to the bottom of the sea
- their remains were covered In mud
- the mud turned to rock and put pressure on the dead animals and plants
- the rocks around them also heated them up; the heat and the pressure turned them into crude oil
- pipes are drilled into where the oil is and is pumped out
- the oil is burnt as fuel for cars and making electricity
why is crude oil considered a non-renewable energy source?
- it has limited resource
- takes millions of years to be produced
- is used faster than it is produced
what are the substances that crude oil is refined to? (in order)
gases, petrol, kerosene, diesel oil, fuel oil and bitumen
what are gases used for?
cooking and heating
what is petrol used for?
fueling cars
what is kerosene used for?
fuelling aircrafts
what is diesel oil used for?
fuelling cars and trains
what is fuel oil used for?
fuelling large ships and power stations
what is bitumen used for?
surfacing roads and roofs
what is the length of the carbon chain in gas?
1-3 carbons
what is the length of the carbon chain in petrol?
8 carbons
what is the length of the carbon chain in kerosene?
10-16carbons
what is the length of the carbon chain in diesel oil?
20 carbons
what is the length of the carbon chain in fuel oil?
40 carbons
