cracking Flashcards
what is cracking?
cracking is the process of breaking down long chains of alkanes into shorter alkanes and alkenes
what is the use of cracking
the use of cracking is to obtain shorter and more useful fractions to meet demands
give me a common example of cracking
decane is broken down into butene (an alkene) and hexane(an alkane)
does the suffix- or the prefix- tell you if it is an alkane or an alkene?
the suffix-
what is a catalyst?
a catalyst speeds up the rate of reaction by lowering the activation energy
what happens during the process of cracking?
during the process of cracking, long chains of hydrocarbons are heated up and mixed with steam over a hot catalyst to break them down to a shorter, more useful alkane and alkene
what are some molecules produced called?
alkenes or unsaturated hydrocarbons
what is cracking an example of?
thermal decomposition
what is a covalent bond?
a covalent bond is when atoms share electrons
what are hydrocarbons?
hydrocarbons are compounds that only consist of hydrogen and carbon atoms
what are examples of hydrocarbons?
alkanes and alkenes
what are the first 4 alkanes?
methane,ethane,propane,butane
what are the first 4 alkenes?
methene, ethene, propene, butane
what is the substance you use to distinguish alkanes and alkenes?
bromine water
what is the colour of the solution when bromine water reacts with an alkane?
colourless
