Q
how crude oil is separated?
A
- oil is heated. most turns into gas and the bitumen stays liquid and it’s drained off at the bottom.
- in column there’s a temp gradient. hot at bottom, and gets cooler as you go up). when a substance reaches the temp that is lower than their boiling point they condense.
- longer hydrocarbons have higher boiling points, they condense early on.
- shorter hydrocarbons have lower boiling point, they condense later on.
- bubble caps in column stop the separate pd liquids from going back into the column and remixing.
