heightened tension - foreshadowing - he eventually casts away his name to bring down Abby and it costs him his life

Hightened tension - feels that without his name he cannot raise his son as men if his name is tainted
Conflict in individual - he’s admitted to the crime but wants his reputation still. John is conflicted as his reputation is very important to him
