Labs: WBC elevated, Large # bands = bacterial infections

A

Tx symptoms!!

  • Humidified air
  • Reassurance

What is the cause of pertussis? How is it transmitted?

A

Bordetella pertussis

Transmitted via resp droplets so it is highly contagious

Describe the presentation of pertussis

A

3 phases

  1. Cattaharal Phase (1-2 wks)
    - -> no specific sx
  2. Paroxysmal Phase (begins wk 2)
    - -> Bursts of rapid consecutive coughs followed by a deep high pitch inspiration
    - -> throw up after coughing
  3. Convalescent (4 wks after onset)
    - -> gradual dec. in frequency and severity of cough

  • Supplemental O2 therapy
  • Nasal CPAP
