Cross Section of the Brain Flashcards
Crucial in motor control and is responsible for coordination, precision, and timing of motor activity
Cerebellum
Often referred to as grey matter and responsible for many “high-order” functions like language and information processing
Cerebral cortex
Provide a pathway for the circulation of the cerebrospinal fluid, protecting the brain from swelling and trauma
Ventricles
A thick bundle of nerve fibres including neurons that cross to opposite sides of the brain. Important for inter-hemisphere communication
Corpus Callosum
Made of grey matter and part of the limbic system, these act as a relay stations for the nerve impulses on certain structures inside the brain
Mammillary Bodies
A gland that produces hormones that control other glands and regulates various body functions
Pituitary Glands
All motor and sensory nerve connections from the brain to the body go through this structure
Brainstem
Name means “bridge” and is responsible for transferring nerve signals
Pons
Structure is part of the limbic system and responsible for the sense of smell
Olfactory Bulbs
Half of the axons in each optic nerve cross the midline here to enter the opposite side of the optic tract
Optic chiasm
Relay and integration centre for many processes, including sensory information entering the brain and motor information leaving the brain
Thalamus
