cross-cultural patterns of attachment Flashcards
Why is this study important?
if attachments is evolution then there would be similar patterns of types of attachments found across all societies
what is aim 1 of the study?
to assess whether within separate samples there was a pattern in the distribution of different attachment types
what is aim 2 of the study?
to assess the xtent of inter-between and intra within cultural differences in attachment types in separate samples
what is aim 3 of the study?
To assess the similarities and differences in the amount of type A-C attachment types in separate samples
what was the procedure of the study?
- a meta analysis of 32 studies from 8 countries that used the strange situation procedure to assess mother-children attachments and which classified attachments as either A B or C.
- 1,9990 separate strange situation classifications were used.
- all studies compromised at least 35 mother-infant pairs with infants below 2 years old
what were the findings?
overall attachment type was A-21% B-67% and C 12%
in samples from all countries (except germany) the modal attachment type was type B
Type A was found more in western cultures whereas type C was found more in isreal, china and japan
What were the conclusions of the study?
- the data suggests there is a difference in the pattern of cross-cultural attachment types
- overall patterns of attachment types were similar to what ainsworth found
- an important cross-cultural similarity is the predominance of type B
