Cross cultural Communication Feb 1 Flashcards
RSS
- expected behaviours are learned through observation and participation in RSS (occur everyday over and over again)
- RSS comprises of person, place, time, activities and interactions
What happens when an aspect of RSS is unfamiliar (2)
Person may feel discomfort
Selective in attention may occur and cause ppl to dismiss changes
How does the nursing experience relate to RSS?
Nurses are comfortable interacting with patients who have an understanding about what behaviours are expected
Selective inattention can cause nurses to miss verbal and non verbal cues
Context and RSS
RSS requires behaviour to be contextualized; that is behaviour has to be analyzed on the basis of who, what, where and why
Contextualizing behaviour allows the nurse to overcome selective inattention and adapt to cultural differences
What are the two methods that can help you overcome selective inattention
Patient observation and contextualizing
What is dual ethnocentrism - definition and three components
- multiple realities, part of every nurse-pt encounter
1) our professional knowledge - nurse evaluates and responds to pt on the basis of their own values
2) pt. perspective - evaluating the nurse and the healthcare system
3) the environment
What is the CONFHER model
- framework to organize cultural assessment questions Communication Orientation nutrition Family Health beliefs Education Religion
Linear vs circular pattern
Linear - family/friends, biomedical, traditional ie. Spiritualists, priests
Circular - biomedical, traditional, then back to biomedical
Why may migrant farmers resort to the medical system late (3)
- need to work to support their families
- limited access to healthcare services
- rely on time honoured alternative treatments that have been passed down
What is the LEARN model
Listen with sympathy and understanding of the patient’s perception of the problem
Explain your perception
Acknowledge and discuss differences and similarities
Recommend treatments
Negotiate treatments
