Crops Flashcards
1
Q
SAP Analysis
A
SAP extraction from plants to asses the true nutritional status of a plant
Minerals and Nutrients
2
Q
Screening Test
A
- Weigh out 100g of grain
- Machine shakes it for 2 minutes
- There is a sieve on top and whatever falls through the sieve is weighed out
- That figure then is your percentage screening
- If the final weight is less than 8%, the load can pass
3
Q
Hectolitre Weight
A
- Use a chrondrometer
- Measures the weight of the grain
- Malting barley must have a hectolitre weight of over 63 KPH to pass.
- Oats usually range from 52-58 KPH
- Wheat usually ranges from 74-80 KPH
- Anything that falls below this will be used as feed barley
4
Q
Protein Content Test
A
- To determine the total protein and moisture content of whole barley by near infrared transmission
- Distilling needs a lower protein content, therefore farmers need to be mindful of fertiliser usage, particulary nitrogen to ensure the protein is low to meet distilling criteria
- Worth 10 euros more a tonne
- For distilling- protein has to be lower than 8.8%
- For brewing, the protein content has to be between 8.9% and 10.8%
- If protein content is greater than this, the sample will be rejected and used for feed.

Q
Winter Barley
A
- T1 (GS 31/32)
- T2 (GS 37/40)
- Sow date 10th October
- Oats set before
- They would usually have winter barely as a third cereal
5
Q
Common Weeds
A
- Chickweed, nettles and Mayweed
- Spraying for cereals (4 weeks)
- Spraying for beet (21 days)
- Wild oats (4 weeks)
- Speedwell: becoming resistant to herbicides
- Chickweed is the first weed to become herbicide resistant
- If there are a lot of resistant weeds, plant grass for 3-7 years
6
Q
Common Problems this year
A
- Compaction due to heavy rainfall
- Manganese deficiency
- Septoria
- Ramularia
- Chocolate Spot
- Phynchosporium
