They’d sat in the Rump parliament; or they were royalist sympathisers
What did the MPs want?
Increase in parliamentary power, limit religious liberty and reduce the size of the army
Why did Cromwell dissolve parliament?
He was furious that the MPs asserted that a standing army had to be authorised by parliment
When was the first session of the second Protectorate parliament?
September 1656 - June 1657
Why were 100 MPs excluded?
They weren’t sufficiently God-fearing
What problems were there with taxation?
Militia bill - proposed continuation of Decimation tax (to pay for Major Generals)
