Classical School of Criminology and Present Day Crime and Crime Prevention. Due by Day 7. The primary argument of the classical school of criminology is that offenders commit crimes due to rational choice. As discussed in the Classical School of Criminology video, rational choice theory focuses on offenders weighing the risks versus rewards prior to engaging in a criminal act (Dorsey, 2013). If the risks are low and the rewards are high, the offender will engage in the crime. However, if the risks are high and the reward is low, the offender generally will not engage in the offense. In addition to the aforementioned, the classical school of criminology also contends that punishment is the primary way to deter crime. In order for punishment to be effective, it must be swift, severe, and certain. In your paper,
Explain how crime can be prevented as it relates to the beliefs of the classical school of criminology;
Assess the major components of the classical school of crime causation;
Discuss specific and general deterrence as it relates to the presence of punishment and the challenges to create deterrence in today’s society; and
Discuss how risk can be increased and rewards decreased as it relates to conventional crimes and the rational choice theory.

Explore the ideological tendencies of the majority and minority of the current U.S. Supreme Court. What is meant by liberal or conservative judges? Considering the process for selecting Supreme Court justices, is it possible for politics to not play a role in the process? Explain how these ideological/political tendencies shape U.S. Supreme Court opinions. It is recommended that your post contain approximately 400 words.
Guided Response:
The vast majority of legal scholars who review Supreme Court cases agree on the political leanings of varying U.S. Supreme Court eras. Analyze the ways in which a criminal case can get to the U.S. Supreme Court. Which cases must the Supreme Court review, and which cases do they have discretion on whether or not to render an opinion? What is the court’s discretionary jurisdiction called? It is recommended that your post contain approximately 400 words.
Guided Response:
Very few cases must be reviewed by the U.S. Supreme Court. Provide your opinion of whether or not more cases should be mandatorily reviewed by the nation’s higher court. One option the Court has is to let lower court cases stand. In essence, the Court may ignore reviewing a case because the Court either agrees with the lower court, or believes that the case is not important enough for review. Analyze whether or not this is the best legal standard for review. Review your colleagues posts, and substantively respond to at least two of your peers. Continue to monitor the discussion forum until 5:00 p.m. (Mountain Time) on Day 7 of the week, and respond with robust dialogue to anyone who replies to your initial post.

Garnering all of the information about constitutional rights and the justice process you have received from this course and your understanding of the “personalities” of the U.S. Supreme Court, prepare a six to eight page paper (not including the APA title and references pages) in which you detail the history of the Supreme Court from 1953 to the present day as it relates to one of the specific issues listed below. Evaluate the terms of the Warren Court (1953-1969), the Burger Court (1969-1986), the Rehnquist Court (1986-2005), and the current Roberts Court (2005-present) to your chosen issue, listed below. Examine the political philosophies of each court, and indicate significant changes in the law concerning your chosen issue that was witnessed through each court’s era. Then, examine the current makeup of the U.S. Supreme Court and modern trends in constitutional law and criminal procedure. Based on current trends, discuss whether or not you believe the criminal justice process will fundamentally change or remain the same in the foreseeable future for your chosen issue.
Your paper will focus on the court process, judicial process, and constitutional issues for one of the following issues:
The right against self-incrimination and the right to remain silent (U.S. Const. amend. V)
The right to privacy for computer, Internet, and cell phone property and communications (U.S. Const. amend. IV)
Search and seizure laws as applied to computer, Internet, and cell phone property and communications (U.S. Const. amend. IV)
Right to counsel (U.S. Const. amend. VI)
Capital punishment and cruel and unusual punishment (U.S. Const. amend. VIII)
Right to trial in criminal proceedings (U.S. Const. amend. VI)
National security considerations
You may choose a different issue, but you must obtain instructor approval by the end of Week Two.
