Crito Flashcards
Crito is a good example of reason nad convention
reason: Socrates wants to do what is right
Convention: Crito wants him to escape
Why did Socrates not escape:
The laws provided security throughout Socrates’ life
Disobedience to the laws cannot be justified because of personal inconvenience
Contrast between apology and Crito
In apology: Socrates insists on everyone agreeing on a conception of justice that should be available to anyone who is reasonable.
In Crito Socrates concedes that justice is whatever ‘the Laws’ says it is
Wrong doing
The real harm in wrongdoing is harm to one’s soul. Of course wrongdoing can cause problems for the people ‘wronged’, but that’s not as important as the harms one does to oneself.
Punishment
Socrates concedes that punishment may harm his body. Punishment can obviously inflict pain on the wrongdoer. But none of those harms or pains are as significant as the harm one does to oneself.
