Criticisms (social class) Flashcards
Who talks about the myth of cultural deprivation?
Nell Keddie
What does Nell Keddie say about cultural deprivation?
Describes cultural deprivation as a myth and sees it as a victim blaming explanation.
She dismisses the idea that failure at school can be blamed on a culturally deprived home background - a child can’t be deprived of its own culture and she argues that wc children are simply culturally different, not culturally deprived.
THEY FAIL BECAUSE THEY ARE PUT AT A DISADVANTAGE BY AN EDUCATION SYSTEM THAT IS DOMINATED BY MC VALUES.
What do Troyna and Williams argue?
argue that the problem isn’t the child’s language but the school’s attitude towards it. Teachers have a speech hierarchy:
- MC speech
- WC speech
- Black speech
What do other critics say?
Reject the view that WC parents aren’t interested in their children’s education
What do Blackstone and Mortimore argue?
WC parents attend fewer parents’ evenings, not because of lack of interest, because they work longer or less regular hours or are put off my the school’s middle class atmosphere. They may want to help their child progress but they lack the knowledge to do so.
Give some criticisms of the labelling theory
too deterministic -assumes pupils have no choice but to fulfil SFP.
Marxists argue it ignores the wider structures of power within which labelling takes place. Also argue that labels stem from the fact that teachers work in a system that reproduces class divisions.
How does Feinstein criticise cultural and material factors?
Shows that educated parents make a positive contribution to a child’s achievement regardless of income levels.
What was Mary Fuller’s study?
A group of year 11 black girls at a comprehensive school were labelled negatively but fought against their label and achieved academic success
